During this week, I have got an email from my friends which have this link, http://www.nineronline.com/vnews/display.v?TARGET=printable&article_id=4370be19b8f54

After I have read it I think I agree that intelligent design should be taught in science class as one of a new evolution for science. Since intelligent design could be described as an advanced science, we should try to treat it as an evolution but not a religion, although some people may not accept. Intelligent design might be used as an advanced science to explain something when science couldn¡¦t. When a new science which comes out with different facts to prove it, humans will keep doing experiments to find out the flaws and make it better, so it will still bring out a lot of criticism and argues from the supporters, critics and neutral. Then it¡¦s not surprise that most people are against the intelligent design should be taught in the science class and it¡¦s reasonable that it would take a difficult period to make the humans to accept intelligent design before there is any result from someone believe in it to prove it.

I agree that intelligent design should be taught in the science class as a back up to the science evolution. Since not everything can be explained with science, then the intelligent design will come and help explaining about that kind of thing which can¡¦t be explained. It is just the same that there is no lab experiment to determine whether God exist or not.

Many people believes in Darwin¡¦s theory about evolution (human is from apes ) , but actually it is wrong. Darwin has admitted that he was wrong, but he can¡¦t take his words after he has stated that human is from apes. It occurs that evolution is what people believe it until now, although it is wrong. It has been proven though 99% of apes¡¦ part of body is the same with human, but 1% of the part of body is not the same with human, so evolution is impossible.

Another reason why we should have Intelligent Design teachings in schools is because students need some type of spiritual nature. Aside from studying about various subjects such as math, history and English, students should also be aware of the deep mysteries of life. A university by the name of Mount Allison declares that there is more to university than the gathering of knowledge. It is a place which encourages individuals to grow as human beings as well. The Chapel at Mount Allison represents those things that are unseen and beyond our grasp and allows students to realize the importance of spiritual nurture as part of the development of the whole person.

Religion can increase a person¡¦s breadth of arguments and views. This is because views can be changed according to what they believe in and to what they are exposed to. If a person believes in a religion then there is a certain view of the world in which they see. In religion a person is exposed to more things than a non-religious person. If a person can see more and understand more then its no doubt it will widen their horizon

In my high school there was a division of classes. Religion was studied in a separate class that specializes in teaching different religion. In religious studies, students are taught about Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Jew, Muslim etc. When learning about these religions, students also learn about how each religion sees the world being created. For Example Creationism in Christianity, how God created the world and all brought life to earth. Also the example of Pan Gu in Buddhism, the Giant that was born to separate heaven and earth, flesh was land¡K etc.

What is the purpose of education?

What is education? Fifty years ago, education is only something that rich people can afford.  However, to the new generations now a days, it is not that simple anymore, it is also a basic requirement for us to survive in the society.

Fifty years ago, the main target that employers look for in an employee is whether they can work hard or not.  Even if they don't have any professional trainings or have not have any proper education or training, as long as they work hard, that is all it takes and the employer would be satisfied about that already.  My parents are from that generation and even though they have not been through a very high level of education, they are still very successful today because they worked hard for it.  Back then, in order for one person to become successful, they do not need to know how to use computers or write essays.  All they need to know is how to have good ideas and know how to manage the people in the company.

However, the days are not the same anymore.  As my parents told me since i was a young kid, in order for me to compete with the other people of my generation, a bachelor degree is really the minimum requirement.  An undergraduate degree to the modern world society is like an entrance ticket, if we don't have it, we can't even pass through the entrance.  When I was in secondary school, I didn't really have much feeling towards their opinion and didn't really understood why they would think that this is a must.  However, after I have came to the United States, I really understood and realize how important it is for me to pursue an undergraduate degree.  Especially after joining the honors programe, I can really feeling that there are a lot of people in the society that are the same age as me that are so competitive and smart.  I realized that degrees and certificates are really important and that the purpose of education has now shifted away from its original purpose.

To me, I think that the purpose of education has changed from a very simple purpose of wanting to teach and pass on useful knowledge to us to being the basic requirement of success.  It is now not up to us or to whether we have interested to study or not, it is based on whether the degree is practical and applicable to what our job would be and that with a better possible future.  Of course there are still people who study because of their own interest, and that is why I really admire researchers or artists who live to pursue their dream.

After reading the article for this week i would like to write about why i choose buiness administration as my major.

It was on a Valentine¡¦s Day that I first became engrossed in my proposed major, Business Administration. On that day, a group of adolescents, in the hope of earning a profit, sold flowers around the dating paradise in Hong Kong. They were so fervent and resolute that they persisted in approaching every potential customer. Yet, their efforts failed. I was one of them.

Though my first attempt at business was a complete fiasco, the experience made business studies captivating as I wanted to understand exactly why my venture failed. Looking back, I realized that my friends and I started selling roses we had bought from the flower wholesale market without cautious planning and groundwork. Owing to our inexperience, we set the price so high that no one was willing to purchase any roses from us. While we were not aware of the business theories of sunk cost and opportunity cost, we insisted on selling the flowers at our high price despite our poor sales figures. Not recognizing that an economic downturn was weakening consumers¡¦ purchasing power and thus hindering our sales, we ended up losing money. To my amazement, the failure did not discourage me. Rather, it kindled in me the desire for a life-long pursuit of business knowledge. When I had to decide my concentration in high school among the options of arts, commerce and science, I instantly selected the commercial stream, where my interest primarily lies, even though it enjoys less prestige than the science stream in Hong Kong.

The invaluable opportunities to work at different institutes during summer holidays have developed my business sensitivity. Before I left Hong Kong for the States to pursue my studies, I had a chance to promote domestic cleansing products, which introduced me to the field of marketing and broadened my horizon. Having meticulously examined the market, defined my goals and made precise plans, I succeeded this time. Aside from this promotion, I was hired as an accounting clerk to perform basic clerical accounting duties last summer. The experience was precious in that I could put theories into practice and learn things that were not taught at school. In particular, I realized that accounting practices in the real world do not necessarily follow everything that is articulated in textbooks. In lieu of merely memorizing theories and concepts, one has to apply oneself in the practical world of business.

Here at Foothill College, I am an Honors student majoring in Business Administration. Through the courses I have taken and the encouragement I have received from different instructors, I have confirmed my interest in Business Administration. My involvement in various club activities has further assured and reinforced my interest in my intended field. My participation in such extracurricular activities has been extraordinarily gratifying not only because I have been able to actualize and practice the knowledge I have acquired, but also because it has intensified my interest in my major.

It has long been my ambition and vision to study in the United States, the world¡¦s most developed country. After years of dedicated studies in Hong Kong, I decided to come to the United States to challenge myself at an academically demanding institution. In order to achieve this goal, I had worked diligently to obtain excellent results so that my parents would support me to pursue my studies overseas. Other than that, I had continuously attempted to advance my English standard since I knew that I would have to express myself in English in the United States.

Actually, I desire to become a prominent entrepreneur in the future; therefore, the very first step I need to take is to major in business. My interest in business has indeed kindled in me the desire for a life-long pursuit of business knowledge. So, when I had to decide my concentration in high school among the options of arts, commerce and science, I instantly selected the commercial stream, where my interest primarily lies, even though it enjoys less prestige than the science stream in Hong Kong.

Upon the fulfillment of these two past goals, I have set further three other goals for myself to accomplish, with transferring to UCLA being my main goal. As a university known primarily for its academic excellence and cultural diversity, not only will I benefit from UCLA's well-established facilities and comprehensive curriculum, but I will also learn and grow by holding motivating conversations with people from all over the world. Aside from evoking critical thinking, I believe that these inspiring discussions will encourage me to appreciate individuals' differences in ability, learning style and viewpoint. In order to transfer to UCLA successfully, I must maintain an excellent GPA, actively engage myself in extracurricular activities and demonstrate my intellectual abilities by getting different awards.

While knowledge is indispensable to success in today¡¦s world, I would like to actualize my knowledge to the fullest extent. I plan to do an internship during my college years so that I can put theories into practice and learn things that are not taught at school. In lieu of merely memorizing theories and concepts, I want to apply myself in the practical world of business.

Since I will need fluent English to accomplish the above two goals, I would like to improve my English standard, both written and oral English, through this English course. Although an advanced English composition & reading course will be very challenging for me as an international student, I will strive for betterment, try my best in every undertaking and endeavor to make every impossibility possible.

In my life to date, grading system is an aspect in education that I always pay heed to. Ever since kindergarten, grading system has been used in each of my schools. Owing to grading system¡¦s ineffectiveness, a great deal of people have started to wonder if the current grading system is the most effective way of evaluating student performance. Although some individuals still prefer grading system to other ways of evaluation, grading system should be abandoned because it fails to accurately assess student performance.

To begin with, different teachers have different viewpoints; therefore, they are likely to give different grades for the same piece of work. I think every person who ever gone to school can cite numerous instances of unfairness and injustice caused by grading systems and practice. In other words, virtually every student has the experience of being unfairly judged. For instance, two different teachers would give two totally different grades for the same essay. Since each teacher has different preferences and points of view, if not individual biases and prejudices, grading system is always considered unjust. Worse still, under such an ineffective system, industrious students are often discouraged by the unrewarding grades teachers assign to their homework or tests.

In addition, grading system determines students¡¦ ability merely by giving examinations and quizzes. For this reason, grading system encourages students only to cram for examinations and learn by rote. Students would simply memorize everything without digestion and attempt to guess test questions. While students may pass an examination with flying colors, does that mean they really understand the materials well? Or are they simply well-trained test-takers? In fact, the practice of continuous assessment over the entire length of all courses can help recognize students who do not perform well in examinations only because they are too nervous. Although they may not do as well as other students in examinations, these students may actually have a better grasp of the materials. As a result, grading system is actually not a good way to evaluate student performance.

While some may argue that grading system is the only means through which teachers assess students¡¦ ability, grading system would just stigmatize and punish the less able students. Grading system would just make the less able students feel inferior to those outstanding students. Not only would these students be frustrated and thus lose their confidence, but they may also lose interest in studies in that they cannot get any gratification from studying. With grading system, students would even have to face sarcasm and mockery form society. Yet, poor academic results under the current ineffective grading system does not mean that one is incapable.

Would you want your children to be born in an education system that may make them frustrated? Would you want them to receive unfair treatment because of different teachers¡¦ preferences? Without doubt, grading system is an ineffective way to determine students¡¦ ability and should therefore be abandoned. Instead, continuous assessment that measures students¡¦ performance throughout the entire coursework should be employed to best evaluate students¡¦ ability.
